Flavor Research and Education Center

Why Us?

FREC combines unique methodology, expert staff, state-of-the-art equipment

Work at The Flavor Research Education Center encompasses a unique methodology by combing state-of-the-art facilities with unequaled expertise which allows it to provide businesses with a sustained scientific competitive advantage.

The Flavor Center is the only U.S. laboratory focused on taste and its role in driving flavor acceptance and perception. We offer all major methods of volatile analysis and cutting-edge instrumentation. One example of our technology is the ability to study flavor release from foods using both in-vivo and in-vitro testing.

In addition to our own research labs, FREC researchers have access to other laboratories and research facilities associated with the University of Minnesota. View a list of University research resources.

Research leverages a history of innovation excellence

Furthering our capabilities is our parent institution—the University of Minnesota, one of the world’s finest public research universities according to the National Science Foundation. The University of Minnesota attracts $563.8 million in external research funding and ranks fourth among U.S. research universities for patent creation and innovation by The Scientist.

The University was the location of the first open heart surgery in the U.S. and is home to a number of famous inventions, including the recent creation of a beating heart.

It is with this same spirit and tradition of innovation that the Flavor Center develops groundbreaking knowledge that fuels today’s flavor and fragrance industry.
